What Happens to Morels in Freezing Weather and Snow?

Although rare, sometimes we find ourselves in the middle of prime morel season, then out of nowhere, freezing tempuratures and snow.

If you are waking up to a winter wonderland this morning and wonder if the snow is going to start killing off off your morel spots, don’t worry! Any of the morels that are already up will be completely fine. In fact, mother nature herself is going to be refrigerating them for you.

Additionally, any rain received beforehand will keep them hydrated so they will not burn, or decay, unless they were doing so before the cold weather and snow set in. What’s below ground will stay below and dormant until the soil climbs back up to ideal temperatures.
